What is it?
A named, weighted combination of an environmental exposure and a population that is more vulnerable to that exposure. Examples include Respiratory Burden (air pollution exposure with respiratory-vulnerable population) and Heat Vulnerability (heat exposure with heat-vulnerable population).
Why it matters
A single pollution measurement does not say whether the people exposed are also at higher health risk from it. Compound signals combine the two, surfacing the counties where both are true at meaningful levels.
