CMS's master directory of every healthcare provider with a National Provider Identifier (NPI). Used to count physicians, advanced-practice providers, and specialists by specialty, location, and active status.
Why it matters
Provider counts from NPPES, adjusted against population, are the standard way to measure healthcare access (e.g., cardiologists per 100,000 residents).
