What is it?
An EPA-maintained record of every reportable industrial release of toxic chemicals into the air, water, or soil, reported annually by the facilities themselves. Reported in pounds released per year.
Why it matters
Communities living near high-TRI facilities are exposed to chemicals that contribute to cancer, respiratory disease, reproductive harm, and neurological effects.
Reference value
There is no single 'safe' threshold; risk depends on the specific chemicals and the distance from the facility. Counties with millions of pounds of annual releases concentrated in residential areas are the most concerning.
